Choosing a putter...
Should we be considering a certain type putter based upon our putting method or is it all just feel?? For example, if I am using a push basic stroke would I do better with a face balanced putter than a Scotty Cameron type (toe angles towards the floor when shaft balanced on my finger--sorry, I forgot the term for this) ?? Would a Scotty Cameron type be better for someone using a shoulder type of stroke?? Just curious.
Thanks, Dave

Heel-toe balance would be the traditional ping/cameron putter. toe droops 30 degrees plus toward floor. Face balance putters r trad choice of top pros who contact ball above equator. I have seen face balanced ping and cameron models. Certain styles or designs can be one or the other, other designs have to be one or the other. There are also pure hangers where the toe drops straight down. Old heel shafted putters do this-- George Lowe designs, the famous Wilson putter. Some Ray Cook models. Getting a custom made putter today is hard but not impossible. Dave Curry [sic?] at Big Oak Putters will make you one, but if you have to ask how much, you can't afford it. However, his production models are excellent. Tom Slighter in Seattle will make you a beautiful flat stick. Slighter can also refurbish any old putter you have. He is an artist. I have two of his, and expect never to buy another putter so long as I live. I've heard Bobby Grace will make a custom putter for anyone... but I'm not 100% sure this is still true. Brian Manzella's article on "Rolling the Rock" might give you an idea of what kind of stroke would work with a face balanced putter, but I've tried his suggested method with several styles of putters and it works pretty fair with all of them.

Thanks for the info Redan. I have recently (with Yoda's help) gone to a push basic stroke. I recently had a falling-out with my Bobby Grace MK5 face balanced model (it has been banished!) and have started using a Scotty Cameron heel-toe balanced model. I read Brian's article a while back--need to pull it out again. When I'm putting well it doesn't matter what I use, so I suspect it may all come to personal preference! Thanks again for your response. Dave

From a player's standpoint I feel that I putt best with a certain style putter. In other words, if you win with a malet, stick with a mallet. If you win with a black putter, stick with a black putter, etc.....

Just my opinion.
