Short Game Practice Exercises and Games?

Does anyone have any fun games they play with juniors/beginning golfers that involve chipping or pitching?

Just to get the ball rolling, we play a "Survivor" Game where four teams pick one target and the person farthest away from the target is eliminated (sits down) until there is only one team standing.

Any ideas would be great and I'll share some more later.

Not specific to kids, but one of my personal favorites for dealing with slow play - Blocks -

Just curious how many people here are familiar with a game called 'blocks'?


When play is slow, a great way to have some fun, and improve your shortgame skills.

How to play:

object is to hit the pre-selected tee markers with your ball, then hit the other players ball and knock them out of the game.

Basic rules:

1) flip a tee to see who goes first, agree on a starting spot

2) you MUST use the club you are going to hit from the tee

3) try to hit each tee marker selected with your ball, when you hit a tee marker (or another ball if you are poison, and its your turn (see below), you get another turn, once you have hit all the pre selected tee markers, try to hit your opponents ball and knock them out of the game

4) When you have hit each tee marker, and are after your opponents, you are 'poison' - ANY time your ball hits another players ball, knocks them out of the game
5) if you hit into an unplayable lie, you can move out in exchange for your turn

This is a great way to increase your skills.... be kind to the tee boxes!

The old basketball game of HORSE can be played with golf also.

For short game it would probably have to be a similar shot with a similar club to count. Just call your shot(runner, flop etc.), hit it, and the next guy or guys have to match it(closest to hole). If they don't H etc..

Let's say the age group is 1st thru 5th grade. This requires games that:

1) are fun
2) keep kids' attention
3) are easy to understand
4) don't (blatantly) single out "losers."

This age group is no doubt a challenge. They will absorb and apply to a point but within about a minute they...yell...run around...hit each other...sit down...fidget...need a drink...
