No More Shanks
I learned a valuable lesson today. The Sweetspot Plane. I alway knew about it. I can describe it, draw it, and tell you everything you ever wanted to know about it. But today I learned that a swinger has to set up (Impact Fix, etc.,) with the Clubface open. Not just because it closes with Horizontal Hinging. When I set up with the Clubface square I couldn't Turn my Hands enough in the Backswing to get the Clubshaft and Sweetspot on the same Inclined Plane (unless-Bent-left-wrist). You have to start with an Open Clubface. The more loft, the more open. No More Shanks. I know it's in the book. But you don't know (really know) things by reading alone. No one ever learned to hit a golf ball by just reading a book. (ya gotta see the movie)

Shanks alot,
Interesting. I find that I tend to hit shanks more now that I experimenting with TGM concepts, even with basic motion practice.

Please elaborate on your set-up, is the face open at impact fix?

Chances are good that you are underplane and/or turning too much in the backswing. That lags the hosel and not the sweetspot. Work on a steeper plane angle and/or less turn/swivel, you may be over doing the turn/swivel. It should be 'allowed', not manipulated.

More important than the position of the face at halfway back, monitor your hands. Grip type is a factor of course.

Millrat, I agree with you on the more shanks issue. Openning the clubface cured that.

The Clubface is open at Impact Fix. It makes a difference. The club seems to swing itself down to the ball. I still have a lot of work to do. Some of which is undoing all of the compensations I needed while having a square Clubface at impact fix and closed Clubface at separation.

Shank you very much,
Played a round this afternoon and shanks were in abundance.

Pulled it together near the end but a frustrating day. An nice side effect to the practice was a marked improvement in pitching/chipping and putting. Basic motion routine seems to paying off wrt the short game, gotta keep plugging away I guess.

If you are a Swinger....you need to SWING.

This is what happens to me if I mix a Startup Swivel with too much Extensor Action.....I end up Hitting in the downswing. No good with that open of a clubface.

It's not the only way to shank....as it's been said before....but it's a common way.

If I wanna open the face like that.....I try for a real SWING.....like little Ex. Action.....Double Shift.....basically a STT.

If I use Single LWAction....i.e. no Swivel in backswing.....I use more Extensor Action....Trace more on-Plane...and Hit.

Dunno works for me.....thought I'd share.

...

Shanks are damn frustrating.....there's nothing else in golf that angers me more than the moment I see the ball rocket off to the right....literally.....makes me want to punch myself in the face.....makes me friggen ENRAGED!!! YARRRGH!GHGARHAG!

Really does make me angry.
