Clubface closed
OK question about hitting. After watching the great videos of the Jeff and Ted on the Address I have decide to try and learn hitting. After range work today I had a question with the longer clubs is recommend that the face be closed a little at address and open for swinging. I’m using angled hinging so If I don’t close the face at all it’s a big fade. If I close it’s a nice straight shot. Second question would be how do you know how much to close the face at address. I’m also using Ted setup a just carrying it back from impact fix.

Thanks
Timm

Timm,

Not sure what the first question is, but you are correct about the clubface orientation at impact fix. Per 2-J-1, "The Clubface alignment at Impact Fix must fit the selected hinge action (7-10 and 10-10).... Angled Hinging gives the Clubface a Slice producing uncentered motion so, while the Clubface does "Close" during Impact, Clubface alignment is slightly "Open" for short shots, but for longer shots, it must be set up more and more "Closed.""

The reasoning behind the "longer the shot" being more closed is a function of club design and the amount of time the ball is on the clubface from impact to separation (which would vary based on the golfers skill, how much thrust will be applied to the shot, etc, etc). This is why there isn't a quantitative answer to the question of "how much closed?" It's just "slightly" more closed and is something you have to experiment with. I too have been trying hitting as of late and it seems I just sort of know how much "closed" works based on "doing it".

would the direction of thrust influence the amount of closed face at setup?
