Need help with Impact Fix
First post here so bear with me, Could somebody explain an easy step by step routine that I could go through when addressing the ball, with every club to take a proper impact fix set up. I know to get my right forearm on plane with my clubshaft (ususally do this by holding the forearm and clubcshaft out in front of me, perpendicular to the ground) but I am unsure as to how far forward to "press" my hands (probably the wrong term to use), is it just until the left wrist is flat? If I am to mimic impact at startup, should my shoulders be slightly open? Do I change the takeaway at all? Lots of questions.

Re: Need help with Impact Fix
Yes, set your Right Forearm Flying Wedge so shaft and right forearm are in line. This determines the amount of knee bend and waist bend needed for every club! You will naturally stand more upright with a 9 iron, than say, a driver.

At impact, your Left Wrist must be Flat, Level and Vertical, and your Right Wrist must be Bent, Level and Vertical. Since ball is always placed before Low Point, which is always edge of left shoulder, there must be some amount of forward lean in the clubshaft providing you keep the above alignments. A good visual cue is that your hands should cover your left toe from the player's perspective at impact. The further back ball is placed before Low Point, the greater the forward lean of clubshaft.

Remember to take your grip at Impact Fix, not before.

Yes, shoulders and hips will be rotated at impact. You right heel may also be slightly off the ground. However, I think the most important alignment to get right are your hands at Impact Fix. Concentrate on them!

Starting at Impact Fix is more compatible with Hitting than Swinging, because of the muscular carry back motion Hitter's use. If you are a Swinger, you are better off starting at 'classic address' position: Bent, Level and Vertical Left Wrist, and Flat, Level and Vertical Right Wrist.

For Hitting, Impact Alignments are sustained during the Backstroke, due the Single Wrist Action they use (only Cocking but no Turning of Left Wrist). Swingers use Standard Wrist Action- they Turn and Cock their Left Wrist during Startup.

Hope this helps!

Tong,

Great post, very helpful, thanks

How would one do this, properly? I am still a little fuzzy with how one takes their grip at impact fix and makes sure that the Right forearm alignment is also correct.

This is how I do it. I am sure there are many other ways with their own idiosyncrasies- and I hope others may share them!

Set your right forearm in line with the shaft on the horizontal plane.

Bring it down on the inclined plane so you are in position to strike the ball. Once you have ingrained the sensation of the whole of your right forearm and shaft on plane, you may skip horizontal plane part, and assemble it on the Inclined Plane.

Then Bend your right wrist (4-A-2). This is a Horizontal movement, not a Vertical/Perpendicular movement like Cocking/Uncocking (4-B-2/3). Right wrist should remain Level (4-B-1). Bending the right wrist only will keep your flying wedges intact. Your hand should cover your left toe visually (7-8 ).

Now put your left hand on the grip, and re-grip with your right.

You want a Strong Single Action Grip (10-2-B).

Suggestion: practice doing the above on a flat horizontal surface such as kitchen table top- so you set wedges and take your grip on the actual table. Then keeping everything constant, move the whole unit onto the inclined plane. Yes, it sounds tedious, but that’s how one obtains the precision alignments of TGM.

setting up
Bendet2,
In the book- 3-F-5 and 7-2 are good places to look to cover this area. Tongzilla had some great thoughts and as he mentioned others may add to this section. But make sure you buy the book first- as you mentioned you didn't have the book.

The first thing that I would do to set-up to the ball is to establish your plane line. If the plane is the heart and soul of the golfswing, then you better line it up correctly. I would use the spot system of alignment to properly align the plane line. Stand behind the ball and pick a spot out in front of the ball to determine the plane line. That line between your ball and the spot in front of it determines your plane line and can help you align your clubface properly(strictly speaking - this doesn't necessarily mean that the clubface will be square- but the plane line gives you a visual reference point to determine square, closed, open), help you have a consistent stance to the ball, etc. Once you go through all the other items to properly set-up to the ball (not covered here), and before the takeaway- draw an imaginary line from the spot you picked in front of the ball - back through the ball to a corresponding spot 12 inches or so behind the ball- on the plane line- you can use that spot or that line between the ball and that spot to trace the plane line going back and control the consistency of movement of the club going back.
