Hot Start In Tucson

John Riegger is off to a red-hot start at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson:

Birdie!

Birdie!

Birdie!

He holed from the front bunker on #1. Was over the green in two on the Par 5 second and then chipped to 4 inches. Then made it from 6 feet on #3.

Go low, John!

P.S. Gotta love this new TourCast product on the PGA TOUR website!

dcg1952 02-23-2006 04:59 PM

Five under through 7 holes. SWEET!

Yoda 02-23-2006 05:04 PM

The Energizer Riegger

John is continuing his torrid pace. Missed a short birdie putt on #4 (9' 8") but then made two more birds on #5 (from 11 feet on the 202 yard par 3) and #7 (from 12 feet). Missed a 14-footer for birdie on #8 and is now -5 for the tournament and in 5th place (includes early finishers). He just put it 14' 6" from the hole from 175 yards on #9. The man's hittin' it close and makin' a few putts. That's how they get it done on the PGA TOUR!

Yoda 02-23-2006 05:20 PM

Brian's Song

Meanwhile, Brian Gay is gettin' it done, too. He started on the back and is now -3 after 5. These guys are good!

Yoda 02-23-2006 05:53 PM

Riegger's Rumble

John just rolled in an 18-footer on #11. He's -6 for the day and T-2! He's now 26 feet from the hole on the par 3 12th, ranked as the 5th hardest hole on the course.

Yoda 02-23-2006 06:48 PM

Roll John!

Par. Par. Par.

Now John's got it 81 yards from the hole on the 610-yard 15th. Needs to pick up another birdie and break this four way log-jam at -6. The other three guys are done (Waldorf, Kelly and former champ Hjertstedt).

Whoa! Looks like it's going to happen. He's just stiffed it to 2' 4"!

Waiting...

Still waiting...

YES!

7-UNDER!

And........

The crowd erupts!!!!!!!

One Dropped

Rats.

First bogey of the day.

John was in the fringe 36 feet from the hole in regulation. But he left it short (6' 9") and couldn't get the next one down. Back to -6 with two to play.

Next up is the 186-yard par three 17th. Largest green on the course. Can play up to four clubs difference front-to-back. Fourth toughest hole.

Here we go...

John just hit it 194 yards right over the top of the flag to 25' 9".

He called me during the PGA Show last month while I was talking with V.J. Trolio in his Putting Arc booth. He asked me to send him a Putting Arc, so I did, and he's been working with it this past week. Says it's helping. With today's average of 1.538 Putts per GIR and 8 one-putts overall, it sure looks like it!

EdZ 02-23-2006 07:22 PM

Thanks for the play by play Yoda ;)

That was fun to read, and I'm sure fun to do! Great playing John!

Yoda 02-23-2006 07:28 PM

In At Six-Under

Routine two-putt at 17.

He's hit it 282 yards down the middle on the 18th. And just now, from 186 yards, he's hit it 12 feet. Roll that sucker in, John!

....

....

AAGGHH! Just missed!

A 4-inch tap-in for a ...

66!

Great round, John Riegger!

Turn On That Tube Tonight!

Okay, guys and gals, you've got TV duty tonight. The night owls can watch today's Tuscon play from 11 PM to 1 AM on USA. Everybody else...

Set those VCRs and TIVOs and watch it tomorrow. 'Cuz you just know that John Riegger will get the serious air time he deserves!

Also, there may be a little Riegger action on The Golf Channel and Golf Central at 9 PM.

Finally, I may be more than a little biased, but John's holed bunker shot at the first gets my vote for Shot of the Day!

John Riegger's First Round Stats

Sometimes, a player shoots 66 and you read about the miles of putts he needed to make it happen. Not so in John Riegger's round today. Instead, it was 'business as usual' for this fine Ball striker. He's been hitting the Ball great lately but getting nothing out of it. Well, today he got something out of it. And that 'something' -- a 6-under par first round and a tie for 2nd in a 144-man field -- was exactly what he deserved.

Take a look at today's very impressive stats:

Driving Distance: 289.7 yards.

Longest drive: 301 yards.

Driving Accuracy: 85.7 percent.

In other words, LONG and STRAIGHT, with a Total Driving stat that ranks today's performance in the 93rd percentile.

Greens in Regulation: 77.7 percent

Average putts per GIR: 1.571

Yes sir. That's a mighty fine day. A mighty fine day indeed.

Cool Stuff

Lynn,

This is really cool stuff. Wish I would have tuned in earlier today to get the blow by blow or should I say stroke by stroke. Talked to John last night and he really felt good. I can honestly say I expected that round today.

It was a really great day today. I had fellow Golf Machiners VJ Trollio, Mark Blackburn, Chris Wertz, Buzzy Brown,Beau Ketchum, and Tim Brown at my place for a talk G.O.L.F. session. As we learned from each other, our students John Reigger and Heath Slocum were playing well in Tuscon.

I Love The Golfing Machine.

Congrats!

John,

Congratulations! I think it wasn't but in the last week, that you said you had it "right there" and just needed to be patient-I guess you knew what you were talking about!

Thanks for taking the time to be a part of Lynn's forum, and looking forward to see you play your best in this tournament and beyond.

Very nice round John, may you continue you to keep it in the short stuff and finding the bottom of the cup....

Round Two Results

Tough day today. John drove it longer but didn't hit quite as many fairways. Nor did he hit quite as many greens. Throw in an average of 2.00 putts per GIR with a couple of three-putts, and you get a +3 round. But there are 36 more holes to go in this outing, and at -3 for the tournament, John will be around for the weekend to play them. Good hunting!

Thom 02-24-2006 06:20 PM

Oh no

Right now John is on the wrong side of the cut line:(

I feel sorry for him after that beautiful first round

Ouch. John's 3-under par total of 141 is currently T-72 and one back of the projected cut at -4.

The same total was good for 56th place when I wrote my post this afternoon. With the cut at low 70 and ties, I didn't think there would be a problem. But I forgot...

This is the PGA TOUR...

John,
How about posting your 2006 tournament schedule so we can come watch you play?? Of course if you make the final pairing on Sunday and we wouldn't have to leave our living rooms.
