Focus
What does FOCUS mean? What do you FOCUS on when you play? Mechanics? Target? Plane Lines? Hands? Pressure Points? Tempo?
What is the most effective thing to focus on when PLAYING golf? |
The image in your mind of the result you intend and your trust in your bodies response to that image.
|
Before the shot I focus on what I want to do, visualise the shot, pick the club, rehearse the hinge action etc.
Over the ball I focus on a clearkey and let it happen |

Well....I think there's an Energy component to it....i.e. "I have no focus" today usually means you're low on energy....(or stressed/worried...too much on the mind- for whatever reason...could be tournament pressure, etc.).
... The other part of it is a clear mind IMO..... For golf, I think an intense FOCUS (i.e. "I've really gotta grind down and focus on this one") is overrated.....if you're forcing it anyway. Either you're into it or you aren't... And there's ways to get yourself into it and to clear your mind, etc.....but it can be tough if you're just not "there." ... And then I guess there's where you would focus your attention....on the target when you're playing of course.....(very little mechanics).....in preshot......then nothing over the ball....no conscious thought (Clear Keys are great IMO). |
Hocus-Focus
Eliminating that which is unnecessary.

Right now you are breathing. Probably didn't notice that until I brought it up. There are always so many thing going on arround us. If you start paying atention to thing that are not significant to your objective, you lose you focus. Is what you are paying attention to helping or hurting your ability to meet your goal? I really like Daryl's post regarding narrowing in on things; Hands and Target. Now where did I put my silver surf-board? |

I think I saw your board at the Hardees drive-thru gettin' a Thickburger combo. |

Great post drewit.....the one about being target-oriented (I'm hesitant to say "focus on the target" btw- makes it sound like you have to stare at it or really FOCUS your eyes at it...I think that's bogus)....
I think.... If your habits are built in enough you should not be worried about ANY mechanics while you're over the ball....and very little during the round period. I mean, you're gonna think of some things....hopefully one thing at a time....a simple little key thing....but..... ...when it's time to "put this one on the middle of the green," I think it's important to forget about all that more-or-less....and be target-oriented..... |

The focus in golf comes in the form of routine or program and the inner calm, love and trust in yourself to preform everything without fear of getting it wrong. If you fear getting it wrong - that fear disrupts you, just like it does in life. It is best to practice in an extremely slow speed continous motion (basic motion circulum - chapter 12) with strict monitoring to where you build your mind to do it. Once you have it, let your mind just feel it and let it become a part inside of you. When you run the program at full speed you better trust what you have built with no fear or thought. No hate for yourself when things don't go your way - only love for yourself without being afraid. Like anything you do what you do gets stronger everyday and you must purge yourself to do the right things - not just in golf but life. That is focus. |
