Lazy Man's Guide: Guiding the Clubhead
These are the means a player can use to guide the Clubhead. Most useful from Release to Follow Through which is roughly about two feet back and forwards of the ball. But can also be used during Start Up. Remember, as it goes back, so it tends to come down.
Tracing means 'to point at'. For example, pointing at an object with a flashlight. To cover something means if you drop the object you're covering with straight down, then it touches what you're trying to cover. For example, if I cover the Ball with my Clubhead and I drop the Clubhead straight down then it will land on the Ball. Basic Geometric Plane Line What is it? The Base Line of the Inclined Plane that goes through the Ball. It is usually is the Target Line for a straight shot. How do I use it? Trace the Plane Line with your Right Forearm and the Clubhead. Notes If the Clubhead goes 'straight back', then it would be covering the Plane Line, not Tracing it, which produces an Off Plane motion. Preferred alternative to the Arc of Approach procedure. Useful for Swingers and Hitters. Arc of Approach What is it? The curved path of Clubhead Blur that goes through Impact Point and Low Point. How do I use it? Cover the Arc of Approach with your Clubhead by monitoring the blur of the Clubhead during Release and Follow Through. Notes There is an optical illusion since the tip of the arc of the blur which represents Low Point is usually after (unless you're playing a Lob Shot) the Ball. It's also hard to tell how sharp the arc needs to be. So, Tracing the Basic Geometric Plane Line, which produces the same result is preferred. The Clubhead covers but does not Trace the Arc of Approach. Hence there is no Arc of Approach to an Arc of Approach procedure. Used by Swingers. Angle of Approach What is it? The Straight Line that goes through Impact Point and Low Point. How do I use it? Cover the Angle of Approach with your Clubhead from Release to Follow Throught. The Angle of Approach is also Traced by the Right Forearm. But the Clubhead does not Trace the Angle of Approach because it covers it instead. Hence there is no Angle of Approach to an Angle of Approach procedure. Notes Requires a steeper Plane Angle so that your Clubhead continues to Trace the Basic Geometric Plane Line. Don't worry if your Clubhead goes 'above Plane' after Low Point because you are continuing to Cover the Angle of Approach all the way to follow through. Useful but not mandatory for Hitters. Not a Swinger's procedure. Bonus Secret: The Aiming Point Concept What is it? Basically a point where you direct your Thrust. For example, if I want to punch your nose, then I will direct my thrust at your nose, not your arm. It will also be a straight line effort -- not a 'hook' type punch. How do I use it? Choose an Aiming Point on your Plane Line. It can be the Ball itself. From the Top of your of your Stroke, draw an imaginary line from your Right Forefinger to your selected Aiming Point. Then carefully direct your Thrust along this line and through the Aiming Point, not just to it. It always feels as though your Hands are going straight down, never up or in an arc. Notes Using the Aiming Point automatically incorporates Plane Line Tracing. Move Aiming Point forwards for shorter clubs, and backwards of longer clubs. This is because shorter clubs reach their In-Line condition (with the Left Arm) sooner than longer clubs. Just because you are Monitoring the Downward Thrust of your Hands does not mean you are Thrusting with your Hands and Wrists which inevitably causes Over Acceleration and Clubhead Throwaway. Thrust is either Centrifugal for Swinging (Rotating Pivot creating Throw Out Action) or Muscular for Hitting (Right Arm Linear Thrust). Essential for both Hitters and Swingers. |
