Elbow Pain
I've been working diligently for the last month on a flat left wrist and bend right wrist through impact with some good success. The problem is I have developed significant discomfort in the outer portion of my right elbow. It is especially uncomfortable at the point of full right arm extension while the right wrist remains bent. From what information I have gathered so far, this seems to be similar to "tennis elbow" as opposed to "golfers elbow" which affects the inner aspect of the elbow. The discomfort started even when I was doing drills with dowels and hadn't even hit any balls yet. Now that I have started to hit balls, it's gotten considerably worse.
Is this something that is common to starting out with this or do you think I might be doing something wrong? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW I realize hitting off of mats may be exacerbating it but I have hit off of mats for over 20 years without ever having this problem before. Thanks, Marty |
Me too
I had the same problem. Fortunately, it resolved when I rested a day or so between practice sessions. Not sure what the problem is or was but am interested in hearing some ideas.

** disclaimer!! I don't make these or sell these or get any royalties in any way. I'm also not a doctor or physical therapist.
That being said, I have one of these little gadgets: http://www.powerballs.com/ I'm on the computer quite a lot during the week and this seems to help stave off carpal tunnel and tendenitis in the wrists, hands, and elbows for me. It is also a nice, gentle tool for lightly rehabing injuries from the hands all the way up to the shoulders. I would post this question in the "Fit for golf" forum; Vickie could provide the best answer for you. This may not be your problem since you are experiencing pain doing drills, but something else to look into is whether or not you are "swinging the right arm". Homer talked about it in 7-19 and you can search for more info on this site. Quote:

I seriously doubt it's a right arm swinging problem....it sounds more like a poor execution problem with the dowels and using direct right triceps thrust instead the magic of the right forearm... I have been using a right arm swinging motion for a few years now....have used weighted clubs and NO right elbow problems. DG |

Well, now I'm not really sure. After reading quite a few past forum entries I was convinced that I was right arm swinging. All I can tell you is that the drills do not cause pain but my elbow is sore the next day. After thinking about my day at the range, in an attempt to keep that right wrist bent through impact, I think I started to PULL the right arm through, which I could see putting strain on my elbow. Odd thing was, I was really hitting the ball well.
