Forged game improvement irons?
I'd like to throw out a topic for discussion here that I viewed in a blog:
Could forged blades improve one's swing in that the player is somewhat forced to make a better swing to produce the feel and result? Maybe blades as practice tools? I play with cavity back now but am considering the change. There's no doubt feedback on off centre hits is incomparable. I play with PING I-3 fairway woods which are very compact and I find that I concentrate a little better on proper mechanics when using them vs 420cc driver. CW |
I do not see much point in playing with anything that makes life harder to score with in a comp. However it is not a bad idea to have a muscleback to practice with if you are not getting full feedback from a cavity back.
If you hit either on the sweet spot the result will be fine. The cavity backs advantage is results from off centre hits and the feedback not being quite so harsh in your hands. That is where the muscleback for mechanics practice is handy. So rather than buying a whole set, find a 5i and a 9i and practice with some purpose on the range with them. |
If you can hit your cast cavity backs well, then forged musclebacks or cavity backs should not be that big of a problem. In my own experience, a poorly struck shot can be felt with both a cavity back and a muscle back (either cast or forged), and the results show with both. Your body will adjust accordingly provided your basic mechanics and swing is sound. If not, build a good G.O.L.F. swing first, then worry about the kind of iron you use second. Just my opinion.:)
