MORAD from the FGI archives
 

I was searching around FGI and came across and old MORAD post by hawkmc. If posting this is against the site rules or if the author wishes for this to be taken down I will gladly do so.

I've often heard that MORAD is essentially The Golfing Machine with a few changes. Does anyone know what the difference is and which one is correct?

I did work a little with O'Grady 10 years ago and liked MORAD's 9 trajectory windows mapping to various swing motions/combinations. I did not experience Mac teaching a reverse pivot motion in the backswing and a really wide downswing, as others have posted. I also worked with a TGM instructor back in 1979-80 when it first was popularized, but there seemed to be too many swing components and variations. Never realy felt that TGM take human physiology/kinetics into account. But I could be wrong and am willing to listen to other approaches if they work.

O'Grady had 9 trajectory windows (High-H, Medium-M & Low-L): HH, HM, HL, MH, MM, ML, LH, LM & LL. Probably from TGM he had mapped the various motions the body, arms, hands and club could make and identified the trajectory it produced. If I understood him correctly, where most people fail is that they mix motions from High, Medium and Low together. Certain combinations do not mix well, particularly a high-traj backswing motion with a low-traj downswing or low-traj hand positions with high-traj arm plane....Mac could demonstrate all 9 trajectory windows, going into detail about the motion and then executing. The LL wedges, draw or fade were impressive and then the high lobs (execute exactly as he had described).

9 trajectory windows sounds like 3 hinge actions combined with 3 ball positions (forward, middle, back) would give you 9 trajectory windows...

MORAD's foundation, its essense of existance, is Mac's knowleadge of TGM he learned from Homer Kelley and Ben Doyle. Without TGM- MORAd would not exist.

You cannot study MORAD without REALLY knowing Homer's TGM.

Like I once told my MORAD friend- Homer built the Machine and Mac took it out for a spin for a test.

Do you need Morad, not really unless you are a real stroke junkie.

Do you need TGM, yes.

Yes I do agree that if you have G.O.L.F TGM background it helps in many ways. But also if you are a fair player who has done many shots in many ways that can also help. I would not send a new golfer out to write the notes down however .But Mac being a player love to help kids alot.
As far as the Window's yes ball placement helps but Morad has 13 spots for each model.
I really myself go to them for shortgame stuff and bunkers.

I am fasinated by this whole MORAD thing, probably because it is kept so secret. I have no hidden agenda or motive in starting this thread and do understand that MORAD can be a touchy subject for some reason. I just enjoy learning about it, this post by hawkmc helped me understand the trajectory windows I sometimes hear people talk about, I was just hoping it might help someone else too. That's all, if the thread goes nowhere I am totally fine with that.

Go for it, Kevin. I have zero problems with anyone posting on MORAD and, in fact, encourage everyone who wants to post on the subject to do so.

This site is all about learning and applying that knowledge -- from whatever source -- to our Games. Obviously, there can come a point where the 'information' of 'interested parties' becomes advertising. Rarely has this admittedly subjective 'line' been crossed, but when it is, we deal with it in the least distracting way.

The purpose of my post was to let members to know that when they start a new thread, they have a responsibility to those reading it. It is important to give it some general direction...even if only to say, "I found this and thought others might like it, too. Enjoy!"

From there, of course, this enlightened membership can take any thread anywhere. As many frustrated thread-starters have learned! But then, that's the fun of the whole thing!

The 9 windows are just different trajectories. One model is more compatible with high trajectories and one more compatible for lower trajectories. In either model mac has things classified to change trajectories by changing essentially two components in your swing. I will leave it at that
