Under plane and pivot

This afternoon I tried to start moving toward practicing Total Motion. I was having a very difficult time of it swinging with a flat left wrist. I checked my plane line by putting a tee into the grip and observing where it was pointing during my backswing. I found that I was way, way under plane. When I corrected my backswing, I found it much easier to take a divot after I hit the ball, not that I did that a lot. Here is my question: what are the problems with swinging under the plane? I am having a hard time transitioning from Acquired Motion to Total Motion, and believe that it is caused in part by not keeping the shaft on plane. A second, but related, question about pivot. I found that when I was conscious of keeping the club on plane, both on the backswing and the downswing, I felt like I pivoted naturally without having to think about it. Is that the right feeling to look for? Thanks for you comments.
