Don't look at the ball?
Looking at various swing pics, noticed that most of them seem to have their head rotated away from the ball. Almost as if they are looking at their right foot and not the ball. I've had a lot of problems lunging at the ball on the downswing. On previous videos, my head would be in front of the ball on a 6 iron swing. I'm very right eye dominant, which I think contributes to this lunging when I keep my eye on the ball. Would it make sense for me to look at something else right of the ball, e.g. plane line or angle of approach? Might even help me think about the stroke and not the flight of the ball. Any thoughts?

Yes, it may help. The vision track training aid uses this approach...i think it might help you get rid of some anxiety plus i think it helps you keep your "impact" head. Meaning putting your head where it should be at impact, just set it there at address.

Alex Morrison style...
Digging over old threads and found this one. Was Alex Morrison the first to suggest "poniting the chin" to the right...like Jack Nicklaus??
I have a few Morrison books and he certainly popularised it as a technique. Does it work through encouraging better balance in the downswing... keeping the head to the right slightly allows a better uncocking motion whilst staying in balance?? |
I would love to see some discussion on this point as I was thinking of posting the same question myself. I have noticed the same thing looking at pics of good players, and had some of my best rounds and ball striking later this summer with this thought, although it's a bit disconcerting to look to the right of the ball in the vacinity of the middle/back of my stance. So...
What should one be looking at during the swing? Thanks |
I've had issues with this myself, and something that helps me is to feel like I'm hitting the ball with my back still facing the target. Something else that my brother does is to feel like his left ear dosen't move from the start of the downswing.

Alex Morrison was obviously on to something that improved swings...but understanding why it works makes it more useful. Thanks |
I think in Nicklaus' case it could have something to do with eye dominance. I think I read he is left eye dominant . . .
