Vijay Singh Speed Stik vs. The Good Ole Dowel

First of all, I'm pretty sure my dowel work is going to lead me to retaining the services of an attorney. My wife is getting sick of me pounding my homemade impact bag night after night. I got the "It's me or golf" speech. Man I'm gonna miss her.

Have you guys seen this Speed Stik thing that Vijay is using? It looks like the Speed Racer Mach 5 version of our beloved ordinary dowel.

Evidently it's weighted at either 20 oz. or 25 oz. plus it has some sort of swing speed indicator.

What do you guys think? Could this be a good addition to the dowel arsenal?

Thanks!

Richard

Speed Stick

I bought one of the Speed Sticks before I learned about TGM. Now I'm afraid to use it while I'm learning TGM. I had it when I was with Yoda but was too embarassed to ask him about it. It also has a gauge that records your swing speed.

My son says I'm a sucker for all the latest gimmicks!

So, I too would like more feedback on it. For now I'm not using it.

Dave,

I'm a gimmick dork too! How heavy is the thing? I know they say it's 20 or 25 oz, but does it swing heavy? Do you lose the feel of the clubhead if you swing a real club after swinging the Speed Stik?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Richard

Dave,

I have a Brooklyn Bridge that will help you with your Visual Arc of Approach. Let me know if you are interested.

I have so many training aids some better than others, but our best training aid is TGM and Dr. Yoda's help.

Feel Heavy?

Well, it doesn't really feel heavy when you swing it. They recommend swinging it back and forth and then to cut loose with it. It's not like a weighted club where the weight is at the end - more like a thicker dowel (maybe an inch in diameter).

I'm really just doing pitches and chips and the impact bag. I'm not sure the impact bag and the speed stick would get along. When I start swinging faster is when the left wrist wants to bend and the right wrist wants to straighten. So I might pick up speed but be going back to the old swing habits.

After I develop the correct impact, I'll probably start using it.

Surely someone else out there has bought this!

jr,

Tell us about that hinged, two-piece PVC Flail and how you use it. Sounds interesting!

I was in Goofysmith aka Golfsmith last Friday and they had both the different weight versions of the Speedstick laying out. No one was around so I tried it out. I dont know, I would think you could get just as much benefit from swinging a broom handle. You wouldnt have the speed indicator but how accurate is the one on the speedstick anyway. The aide that I saw that is strange is the Speed Chain. It's long length of chain on the end of a short shaft with a golf grip. Looks like a torture device from the Spanish Inquisition. Apparently you do a certain amount of reps with this and it develops your fast twitch muscles thus increasing swing speed.

Flail use

I use it to swing back with my center and and it hinges at the top, then I bring it down to the release point. From there I just turn away and it flies out and hits my impact bag. My biggest problem is from the top to release point sometimes I get a little to anxious and it flies out more like a sweep release. I have seen Tom tomasello's dvd and notice he has one also but his has leather to act as the hinge and he really whips it through.
