If you see the ground directly underneath the ball as the bottom of the circle, then you visualize the ball as leaving the clubface on a tangent and the club starts to move inward. However, if you view the ball leaving the clubface as a chord (within the circle) -- which is what it is supposed to do -- then you can more easily visualize how the clubhead must continue to swing down and out along the circumference to the bottom of the circle.
