I wrote this a while back for a friend of mine who was just starting to be captivated by the game. Thought I would share it with all y'all. Why do YOU play????
You only lose at golf when you lose sight of the real reason you are out there, as described in Bagger Vance, or Golf in the Kingdom. It is the GREEN of life that seeps into us when we are there that matters. We are transformed by something that is more spiritual and real than most of our existence. The SOUND of a well struck shot, the CAMRADERIE of good friends, the smell of the dew upon the grass, the breeze in our faces, the thrill of glimpsing perfection, however briefly. Above all it is the realization that the game truly exists within us, and that we are in complete control of the outcome, and that sometimes we actually manage to tame that most elusive part of us which allows us to hit the perfect shot when it has to be hit. It is the lesson of accepting that we are less than perfect, that not all bounces are fair, and that, if we play long enough, it all evens out. It is the lesson that if we just work hard enough for long enough we can own a piece, however slight and fleeting, of heaven.
