Golf Club Design
I recently attended a seminar by Britt Lindsey from The Golf Works. The seminar was based on a new book called... "The Maltby Playability Factor."
It mostly has to do with the measurment of mass and dimensional properties of clubheads. They discuss the horizontal center of gravity, the vertical center of gravity, and moment of inertia(very useful for putters).
Because of the design of many of the older clubs... very long hosels... the sweet spot was barely on the club, and NOT near the center of the face.
Ping, according to Lindsey, was probably the first company to get all these factors pretty close to optimal. The Hawk Eye VFT, according to him, is one that is currently very good... it has a short hosel, long face, and is NOT high in the heel area of the face.
He also went into metal woods, and hybrids. Titanium fairway woods, according to him, are not necassary. In drivers, there is evidently SOME spring effect, and the very light weight materials are of benefit here.
In putters... high MOI is helpful. This helps to resist twisting on off center hits. I believe he said the Futura is one of the best here. A Bulls Eye would be a low MOI putter, but works well IF one can consistently hit the sweet spot. In their testing... the high MOI putters make putts on off center hits that the low MOI ones usually do not.
He went into briefly... balls and shafts also.

There is a very nice list at:
http://www.golfworks.com/article_dis...p?articleid=99
Based on my own experience with various models he lists, I'd say it is quite accurate.
Picked up some Aussie Blades cheap off ebay based on his ratings, looking forward to their arrival.
I'd also be curious to check out the Maltby M-04 for comparison to my 1025M's, apex, FG17's and the Maxfli blades.
Does his book go into the 'feel' and 'feedback' factor? It is one thing to have a forgiving club, and another to get good feeback from it. The 1025M's do a decent job here (the CM's are a set I would recommend to mid to higher hdcp players, as are the Mizuno mp30's and 23's).

Lagster, or should I now call you "Lagster Pressure?"
Ping got everything right. I would have loved to have seen Homer and Karsten get together and trade notes. Ping studied the golf club the way Homer studied the swing. As we say in Jersey- “Perfect Together.”

EdZ,
I just briefly looked at the book. He had a Power Point presentation for the seminar.
He did say, I believe, that around 20-30% of tour players still use the Player Classic or Classic blades. He indicated it was more to do with the LOOK of the club, than the feel.
The book looked pretty detailed, so it might have some kind of feel rankings... but I'm not sure about that.
He did say that the tour players pretty much all have custom grinds, and clubs made specifically for them. They get them very close to exactly how they want them.

Strange they don't have the 29's, since they have 14's to 37's.
Hit the Maxfli Aussie Blades today and they are wonderful sticks. It's 37 degrees with a strong wind here today, so I was only hitting some punch 8 irons. Even in the cold these felt great. Very solid. A different overall feel than the FG17's, but I suspect they will kick the 1025M's out of my bag! More feedback than the mac's, less than the 17's, and very easy to control trajectory.
