A Hogan swing video has been posted at the Gallery. This video was also included in the McLean/TGC Hogan series. Two observations about Hogan. First, his "free ride" from the top down to the elbow plane and how many of us can make that transition and second, his emphasis on supination of the left wrist in 5 Fundamentals. Next, two questions: (1) where does his transition fit in TGM and (2) was the bend in the back of the right as demonstrated in page 103 of the hard back his real secret?
The "secret" was Pivot Controlled Hands to Release Point where he did a Left Wrist manipulation(arching). Secret is not really the correct word, because just knowing what he did does not mean you can effectively and consistently do it.
In the book " Afternoons With Hogan" Jody V., the author says that Hogan told him his "secret" was " running the right knee at the ball" with the start of the downswing. The author also elaborated that the weak left hand grip that Hogan explained in the Life Magazine article was part one of the secret and that since at the time Hogan was still competitive the author was told part two by Hogan in confidence. Interesting read about the man if you don't buy into the "secret"
It is really interesting to hear all those who have "Hogan's Secret".
I think Ken Venturi had it, he pointed to his head.
My prior post was a quote from Ken Venturi.
BTW, for those of you that would really like to know more about Henny Bogan (Hogan's nickname for himself) get a copy of James Doddson's book Ben Hogan An American Life. Well worth reading.
