Grip: 10-2-B
Yikes, I'm posting from work w/out my book--hope I put up the right numbers. Strong, single axis grip. So I get my L thumb over on the aft side. Snuggle right hand/palm over the thumb, R thumb down the aft side as well.

Put the club on the ground--and the face is waaay left of the target line. Is that where it should be, idea that when I open the club face right of target line, it'll compensate, so to speak?

Thanks for any fog-eradicating.

Make sure when you take the grip your left wrist is vertical, otherwise you may end up with a 10-2-D grip. If you have a 10-2-D grip, then set up with a vertical wrist the clubface will point well left.

If you have a 10-2-B grip, there is no reason the face should point well left at set-up as far as I know?

Right hand thumb will be on left side of grip, at about 10.30 (o'clock).

I hold the club at arms length with the clubhead level with my eyes (standing erect, that is), and
then fashion my grip. All I have to do then is to lower my arms keeping a straight back, to assume the address position. A little flexing of the knees and I'm ready to go.

Okay, too late for embarrassement here. I've simply had my R thumb on the wrong side. That would account for Toolish's puzzlement as well re: a hooked lie at address.

With the L hand, shaft seems to lay just about under the crease where the fingers meet the palm--and of course, under the pad. In the R hand, shaft is laying just about across the same crease--where the fingers join the top of the palm, R thumb over the shaft on the fore side, 'bout 10:30 as you said.

Or, do you feel the R hand accomodates the shaft further past that crease and more in the palm?

Thank you both, very helpful.

Here's one subject where a picture is worth a thousand words. If you are a Hogan fan, for starters, look in his "Five Lessons" starting at page 18.

My book wore out long ago, so I checked out my copy of The Hogan Way which borrowed some of the illustrations. Couldn't find the same pic of Mr. Hogan's R hand on the club. From what I could see, it appears the shaft runs directly across PP#3, then just below (i.e., towards the pad of the hand) the finger's creases where they join the pad.

I'm guessing since Mr. Hogan said he wishes he had "Three R hands", the shaft probably lay a bit more in the pad then the fingers.

*I'm leaving for vacation from June 30th until July 9th. But I'll check back in for any more respones when I return.

My thanks for everyone's continued assistance.

Good golfing,

HoganFan
