I do not see much point in playing with anything that makes life harder to score with in a comp. However it is not a bad idea to have a muscleback to practice with if you are not getting full feedback from a cavity back.

If you hit either on the sweet spot the result will be fine. The cavity backs advantage is results from off centre hits and the feedback not being quite so harsh in your hands. That is where the muscleback for mechanics practice is handy. So rather than buying a whole set, find a 5i and a 9i and practice with some purpose on the range with them.
