if it is indeed an older machine, the problem is very likely that the video card does not have enough memory to support full screen. You might try reducing the screen resolution (800x600 is your best bet) and then trying again. If you still have the issue video memory/card is really the root of the problem. You can also adjust the color settings (down to 16 bit).

To do this, right click on anywhere on your screen/background and select 'properties' the 'settings' tab will have the resolution and color settings for you to adjust. You may need to reboot for the changes to be in effect.
