I use Ben Doyle's preshot. Works fine for me:

• Find the line perpendicular to target line and through the ball (ball line)
• Start standing with both feet behind ball line. You are now standing in the left back quadrant looking at the target. Quadrants defined by target line and line through ball.
• Put your right foot on the ball line and slightly across it. Leave the left foot behind ball line. For a moment you have your legs slightly crossed.
• Move your left foot up right beside your right foot. (Note that the ball position is now final - just inside left heel)
• Quickly (before balance is shifted to left foot) move right foot back along target line

Man it sounds complex, but it is not. Has the advatage that you will not have your weight shifted somewhat right & spine will be behind the ball. Also - at least for me - seems to end up with ball position consistently correct.
