Ideally the left wrist is flat and level, plam to plane, before the 'turn' back to square, and the pivot is what causes the 'out'.

It is 'transfer power', taking the power of the uncocking left wrist, and transfering it down the chain via the turning pivot.

Easier to see from a face on shot, but he does appear to sequence his release.
