Just think about the elbow joint. It's main function is flexion and extension with minimum contribution from supination and pronation. Whenever I try to consciously swing powerfully with ONLY on my right elbow I develop pain from medial epicondylitis(golfer's elbow). The reason is that I try to pronate too much at the elbow joint. I think that why it's necessary to have a shifting or looping so that the other joints, naming the shoulder joint is involved to prevent injury. The shoulder has a much greater range of motion simply because it's a ball and socket joint. Most golfers use a combination of shoulder/elbow plane.
