Tournament spectating tip

Just returned from Augusta, where after enduring a complete cavity examination, I was able to enter armed with my Bushnell rangefinder. I'll never go without it again!!! Knowing the exact distances these guys hitting shots was great from many standpoints.

Check this out...I measured the last 20-30 drives off #1 and most of the field was hitting it in the 280 - 295 range. Some that I remember:

O'Meara 278
David Toms 279
Zach Johnson 281
Raymond Floyd 283
K.J. Choi 291
Darren Clarke 301

TIGER WOODS 338 !!! (with a cut). 90 yards left to the pin, second shot bounded off the flagstick into the bunker...bogie.

Oh yeah, DiMarco 252 after careening off the trees to the right. HO HUM, birdie.

It's a fair game alright.

Great post, Eddie. Thanks! I can see how this would be the 'serious' spectator's dream...for incoming as well as outgoing.

Other than the standard golf shot yardages, do you have any other creative uses for the Bushnell? Also, what is the approximate price, and do you have a 'best place' (or at least a 'recommended place') to buy it?

(Guess EC was lucky. Last year at the Masters the officials were checking my binoculars very rigorously & asked me if there were some electronics inside. There wasnt, so I passed.)

I more or less always carry a Bushnell Pro Tour XL during my practice rounds. This is not that creative, but note that other than for determining yardages of your shots the rangefinder is abviously also a great instrument for figuring out yardages to bunkers, trees, over water & other certain spots on the golfcourse. I have my home course pretty well measured out by now & its great to know that one particular bunker requires a 195 meter carry and that there's 267 metres to the far treeline on the particular dogleg etc etc.

Also its great when playing overseas. Obviously I play metric most of the time, but since you can switch between yards and meters its easy to figure out what you need to know at times when you get the yardages messed up.

I have the model shown below & guess it is the only one able to pick a flag from a considerable distance. I like it a lot and in particular I am very pleased with the fact that the batteries easily covered one golf season without need for being changed.

I cannot find the receipt at this time, but I recall that I managed to get it at a price that was some 30% below what tgw.com offered. I'll post details if I come across them again.

That is the Yardage Pro Tour XL. About $370.00 at the big box stores like Edwin Watts. Usually about $100.00 cheaper on eBay.

Wqs just on Golfsmith site ordering grips. They have the Yardage Pro Tour XL on sale for about $250.00

Aye Carumba! $229.00 Buy-it-Now on eBay!!

stimpson 04-12-2005 12:13 PM

I paid $229 a year ago. Anywhere near that should be the right price. And worth it. IMHO it is indeed a useful instrument.

Another obvious but great use is when determining shot length on practice holes. Very seldom you'll find yardage markers there. The Bushnell delivers.
