Distance with Hitting
I've recently moved to a hitting stroke with my irons and have been getting greater consistency which is great but have probably lost a couple of clubs worth of distance, especially with short irons. Longer clubs not so much

Has anyone found a similar thing and is it just a time issue in terms of getting it back? i feel like i'm striking them a lot cleaner (nice ball then turf contact) and compressing the ball although losing distance

One thing i was thinking of is whether i may be approaching more of a vertical hinge instead of angled... not thinking of doing anything with the hands other than "hanging on"

Without the benefit of your video, here are some issues to ponder...

Hitters must be wary of deceleration.
Hitters have Transfer Power (6-B-3-0) and
Hitters also have a Finish Swivel (4-D-0).

Do you have it?

when i tried hitting i had similar results especially in the long irons and driver i didnt lose to much distance on my short irons probably becasue i tended to deloft them with the hitting stroke but in the long irons i was alot shorter. My normal 4 iron distance is about 205 yds and with hitting i could only hit it about 180 or less and had trouble getting the trajectory i like. It makes sense to me that since hitting lends itself to a punch elbow position that you wouldnt be able to hit as far, just as if you where swinging and used the punch elbow postion, just is inferior in regards to distance.

May be the finish swivel?

The finish swivel may well be the problem.. to me it feels like i'm 'holding it off' with quiet wrists. With shorter irons an angled hinge approaches more a vertical hinge as i understand it so maybe i need to 'feel' a bit more roll when i'm hitting the shorter irons? the ball flight is high with a slight fade, hitting straightish or even a slight draw with the longer clubs.... i've always been a drawer (or probably flipper)when swinging

bergsey,

The finish swivel may very likely be the source of your grief.

Mr. Kelley put it this way:

"The weak and timid slice tendency of the underswivel is more prevalent than overswivelling with its draw tendency. But the correct swivel is strong, complete, smooth and rhythmic and leads to full power."

A confirmation that golf is such a strange game to most of us!
I went to hitting from swingin and got just opposite results!
Longer with long irons and same/longer with shorts. Maybe I was performing swinging poorly! 4 iron from 175/180 to 195 but more predictable flight. Maybe coming from swinging I swivel more than you...but more likely to shank than before!
good luck to both of us!
