Left forearm orientation at Top and End
(This question is really about needing a better understanding of left wristcock at the transition from back- to down- swing.)

Yoda noted in one of the Gallery videos that the left forearm is composed of two major bones: the radius intersects the left wrist joint near the thumb, the ulna near the heel pad. As the club is moving in the area of Top and End, the shaft is moving on a plane. Should the two forearm bones be aligned on or parallel to the shaft plane, or should they be rotated somewhat? Any comments appreciated about pros/cons of different orientations at Top/End and how such orientations may change other parts of the Full Motion.

anyone ..?
Hoping someone would offer a comment ...I'm trying to adapt to a shoulder injury that tends to restrict Top and leads to an involuntary laid-off position, I'm trying to train my way through it, a better understanding of how the arm and wrist travel in this area would help, thanks.

if your left wrist is to remain flat then how can your forearm not be on plane with the palm? Wouldn't the wrist be cupped or bowed if the forearm wasn't laying on plane?

Hi Wanole,

This has made me wonder too, as a thread from a little while back shows. Anyway, I can’t resist another go at this!

Could it be that the left palm lies on the plane, but not always the same part of the left palm – remember, it is curled around the grip.

To illustrate – you can think of a flat plane, but you can also think of a line on that plane that the left palm follows. It could be curved, but let’s imagine for the sake of argument that it’s straight. In that case you could imagine it being a broom handle extending to the top of the stroke. The swinger turns their left hand and grasps the broom handle, and then slides their left hand up to the top, keeping a flat left wrist. Because they are constantly holding the broom handle their left palm is on plane, but the further up (and in) they go, the more the left hand rotates slightly to maintain the flat left wrist. At the top (part of) the left palm is still on the plane, but the part of the left palm that was originally on plane is now facing slightly behind the player.

I don’t know if this is right, but it is the only way I can imagine at the top:

1. a flat left wrist
2. the left arm off plane
3. the left palm (or at least part of it) laying on the plane

Chris
